Sheila,
We are a plastics manufacturing company located in West Des Moines. Our
journey towards a tobacco free facility and property has taken us almost
eight years to accomplish and will come to fruition on Jan 1 2008.
I'll give you some of the background and highlights:
During the summer of 2000, we announced that employees would no longer be
able to chew tobacco or smoke in the production facility effective Jan 1
2001, but as a compromise we did designate one area that employees could
smoke and chew.
In June 2003, our company was sold and the new owners wanted to become
tobacco free in Jan 04. Unfortunately, our employee population was not ready
for such a dramatic change. So for the past few years we have been preparing
our workforce towards accepting a tobacco free environment.
Some of the things we did: strictly enforced break time limits, introduced a
wellness program, offered discounts for non-tobacco users on our health
insurance, constantly and consistently communicated the hazards of smoking
and chewing, and closed our smoking area on the Great American Smoke-Out
Days. After a couple of years of doing these things, our employees came to
management and said, stop ripping the band-aid off slowly and just announce
the date of when the facility is going tobacco free.
In Jan 07, we informed our employees that the facility and all company
property would be going tobacco free on Jan 1 2008. We also introduced a
smoking cessation policy that reimburses employees 70% up to $300 (spouses
70% up to $200) for smoking cessation products or classes.
Please feel free to call me if you want more details.

Subject: [IASHRM] smoke free campus
Our retail stores and office buildings are smoke free but not our entire
campus (employees stand out a side door, on the dock, etc and light up). Do
you have a smoke free campus and if so, are you willing to share how you got
to that? Did you go from building smoke free to campus smoke free? Do you
offer paid smoking cessation program? Thank you.
