Hi Kristi,
This topic has come up many times over the past 10 years on the IASHRM
List, so you may want to check out our archives. They go back to 1999.
Prior messages were generated in a different program (Listbox) than we are
presently using (Mailman) and are no longer available. The quickest way
to get to the archives is:

Additionally, Eric Branson gave an excellent presentation on PTOs at a
recent State Conference. You can find Eric's and all other State
Directors' contact information at:

Regards,
Larry Herzog

We are in the process of reviewing our Paid Time Off Program, and are
interested in common practices for Des Moines area employers. Currently
we have a traditional paid time off policy in which employees are awarded
a set
number of hours for vacation, sick time, and holiday time for the year. We
are researching PTO programs. The questions we are interested in gaining
information about are as follows:
1. Do you have a traditional time off program, or a PTO program?
2. If you have a PTO program, what is the maximum number of hours you
allow to be banked?
3. Do you track unplanned absences? If so, at what point do you begin
disciplinary action?
4. Do you require employees use a portion of their PTO bank for leaves of
absences due to STD or FMLA?
5. Do you allow employees to cash out a portion of their PTO bank?
Thank you in advance for your assistance!
