[IASHRM] New Employee Orientation Online

We are experiencing the same thing at our organization regarding first day orientation. We believe with a younger population entering the workforce, placing the benefit piece of orientation online, or saved to a DVD for home viewing, makes sense because younger employees are used to technology and accessing the internet for information. Many employees get restless and tired during the benefit presentation because there is so much information to digest.

Currently we are creating a Power Point presentation with voice-over for the benefits part of orientation, normally done face-to-face during the employee's first day of employment. There will be small segments, or chapters, employees can click on to get information about a specific benefit, thereby alleviating the need to sit through a long presentation.

Initially, we want to use this type of training in outlying offices that do not have an HR representative on site. We hope to incorporate benefit forms into the presentation so employees can print what they need, eliminating the need for HR to send out all the forms, many of which are not utilized. After evaluating the effectiveness and whether employees prefer face-to-face or electronic training, we will make a determination on whether to use this for Des Moines area new hires. If we do move toward electronic training, this automation will save 1.5 hours per week in face-to-face training time for our benefits staff, as we do orientation weekly.

There are many media options available for automated training: Adobe, Power Point, etc. I can envision a total overhaul in the way HR does training in the future.
