                                                                POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION TITLE: Benefits Specialist

DEPARTMENT:  Human Resource Services (HRS)

APPOINTMENT TYPE:  12 Month, Probationary, Pay Grade  III

PRIMARY FUNCTION:  Serves as Benefits Specialist for all University employee fringe benefits including health and dental insurance, life insurance, long term disability insurance, retirement programs and retirement protection plans, flexible spending accounts, FMLA, and catastrophic leave; maintains Oracle Advanced Benefits System and performs monthly premium reconciliation; and facilitates individual and group communication regarding benefit plans.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


1.  Maintains benefit elections, changes, and updates in the Oracle Advanced Benefits System; monitors daily life event reports and updates employee records accordingly; processes new hire benefits paperwork, benefit adjustments resulting from compensation changes, employee terminations and COBRA notices; enters employee supplemental retirement annuity changes; processes length of service life events to update benefits based on years of service; updates benefit rates; and assists with setting up annual open enrollment life events.

2.   Performs monthly reconciliation of health and dental insurance premiums, life insurance plans, long term disability and retirement protection plans, supplemental disability plans, and flexible spending accounts; prepares vouchers to make premium payments; initiates payment for claims and administrative expenses for self-insured plans; communicates enrollment edits and changes to carriers or third party administrators; updates Wellmark membership system as needed; and monitors progress and records on pending actions.

3.   Contributes to customer service-oriented atmosphere through fielding of questions regarding faculty and staff benefits and related University policies and procedures; conducts benefits overview during staff new hire orientations and assists with annual faculty orientation; works in conjunction with Benefits Administrator to develop and implement effective communication tools to further advance employee benefit education; and provides general information about TIAA-CREF, IPERS, and voluntary tax sheltered annuities.

4.   Provides support to Benefits Administrator and Human Resources administration; runs reports and assists in the identification and development of new reports; compiles data for surveys or report requests as needed; and acts as Benefits Administrator in their absence.

5.  Maintains records for leaves of absence covered by FMLA; sends information packet to
employees who potentially qualify; reviews leave requests for approval and communicates determination with employee; works with employee, employing department, payroll and Human Resources to coordinate all aspects of leave; and provides communication to employees who potentially qualify for catastrophic leave donations.


GENERAL INFORMATION:  Bachelor's degree plus at least one year of experience facilitating employee benefits required.  Strong service orientation and excellent written and oral communication skills also required. Oracle experience preferred.
